Hastings owes its existence to the railroads which junctioned here in 1872. Early settlers named it after Colonel Thomas D. Hastings, a contractor for the St. Joseph and Denver railway lines. Homes were going up a full year before the official groundbreaking and Hastings College and the hospital were in place by 1888.
